Sometimes in our search for new and innovative therapy products we tend to forget ones that have been around for a while. Case in point – Therapy Platform Swing. While considered a classic tool for sensory integrative treatment, it still has a crucial place in both therapeutic and home settings because of its versatility and treatment benefits.
DreamGYM Inc. is offering an unusual Platform Therapy Swing that combines two therapy tools: platform and hammock.
Platform is 24″ X 36″ 1/2″ think plywood, covered with carpet (available only in beige), that creates non-slippery cushioned surface.
Hammock is made in Columbia by craftsmen who use 100% pure long-fibred cotton and traditional production methods. The hammocks are colourfast and machine washable. Extremely comfortable the hammocks can be used without platform and be hung from walls, trees or on a hammock stand.- Cloth surface: 200—140 cm (80″—56″) - Total length: 300 cm (120″) - Carrying capacity: 120 kg (260lbs)
- Product weight: 1.6 kg (3.5lbs)
- Pure cotton
- Available in the following colors: white, brown, blue, red, green, and yellow/orange
Some of its numerous advantages are: vestibular input, correcting balance, postural control and proprioceptive stimulation. It can be used in a variety of positions from laying flat to standing and mostly everything in between.
Vestibular input is a crucial element of any sensory diet. Using the Platform Swing, the child can be swung back and forth, or spun in a circle, both providing a different sensation. Depending on the child’s comfort level, the hammock can be used to hold on for extra support, or used by the caregiver to tilt the swing for a greater challenge and increased vestibular input. The Platform swing can be lowered closer to the ground, which will allow the child within it to use his own arms to set it in motion. This is a great exercise for children who need to work on their upper body strength. Another therapy tactic can be to encourage the child to reach for objects on the ground to improve hand-eye coordination. For a child who is extremely adverse to vestibular input, simply sitting on the swing alone or with a caregiver, gently rocking or looking at picture books can be a great start to a physiotherapy session or a wind down moment at the end.
The above are just a few ways that the Platform Swing can be used. Given its countless therapy benefits and ease of use, you are limited only by your own imagination.
